Dear PRs: Most of my work is commissioned, so if you’d like me to review your event you’re probably better off sending your press release to the relevant editor at the British Theatre Guide or The List. Having said that, I have been known to beg my editor to send me to a particular event that’s really got me fired up for whatever reason, so if you think yours might have that effect, by all means email me the details or shoot me an @ message on Twitter.
Stuff that’s likely to get me fired up includes site-sensitive performance, events staged in found spaces, participatory performance, one-on-one theatre, audio-guided performance, multimedia events and anything else that tramples convention, blazes new trails, innovates and generally makes me feel like a toddler discovering his own toes for the first time.
Caveat: I am terrible, awful, sub-human at responding to press releases. I apologise unreservedly to every PR that has ever sent me a press release and received no reply, and to every PR that will repeat the experience in the future. I understand what I’m doing to you and I promise I’m working on it.
Dear editors and commissioners: I currently have a full-time day job, and my current commitments to theatreVOICE and the British Theatre Guide take up as much of my spare time as I’m willing to donate, so I’m not currently available for commissions. In the unlikely event that an editor or commissioner is actually reading this with a view to offering me work: please feel free to keep my details on ice. I’ll post a notification on this site (and on Twitter, and LinkedIn, and in a mass email to everyone I know, and on leaflets that I’ll leave in people’s coat pockets on the tube) if I ever again find myself seeking freelance commissions.
Dear spammers: I already have a Bachelor’s degree, I don’t have the money to invest in Nigerian enterprise, and I’m as satisfied as a man in his mid-twenties can be with the size of my penis. Please leave off.
